In conversation with Rasika Dugal for Manto

She's an extremely talented actress but a warm and compassionate human being at the same time. As Shabana Azmi rightly said, her graph from Qissa to Manto proves what a versatile actress she is. LatestLY recently got in touch with this actress to understand what goes on in her mind when she picks her movie subjects and if she believes that freedom of expression is a struggle that we fight for even today. Playing the role of Nawazuddin Siddiqui's wife is not an easy task. Especially with a fear that he has an ability to overshadow you in every new scene. However, it was the same fear that worked in Rasika's case. When asked if she was sceptical to sign a film with the actor, she said, "Definitely not. I am never worried to work with good actors. In fact, I am worried to work with bad actors (laughs)." Manto Movie Review: A Terrific Nawazuddin Siddiqui Holds A Mirror To The Society In this Immaculately Crafted Nandita Das Film.

The fight that he started some 50-60 years ago still continue to bother the modern Indians who are equally threatened for three crucial words - FoE. When we asked Rasika if she believes the struggle is on even today, her opinion was in sync with us. She said, "Freedom of expression is threatened today more than ever, at least in my lifetime. The film like this is, unfortunately, more relevant today. Sometimes we don't progress but regress. But as they say, 'Umeed pe Duniya Kayam Hai.' Nawazuddin Siddiqui Charges Rs 1 For Nandita Das’s Film Manto.

You can watch the complete interview below where she reveals if Manto will only cater to the niche section of audiences and if a movement as powerful as #MeToo is possible in India.

Rasika has always vowed to sign movies that challenge the actor in her. She even revealed how she rejected a typically commercial movie with a big director because she was unhappy with the role offered to her. Though she refused to divulge any more details about that particular movie, she convinced us that it was a big production house but quality always matters to her than quantity.
