Father- daughter duo Sonam Kapoor and Anil Kapoor have come together on the big screen for the first time with Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. The movie has hit the screens today and it looks like its done what it was meant to do - win hearts all over the country. The reviews are out and critics are all praise for this family drama which revolves around Sonam's character who is a lesbian in the movie. The message from the movie that everyone should take away is that love should not be confined to the boundaries of sex, sexuality, cast or creed. It should be set free. Apart from Sonam and Anand, the movie also stars Rajkummar Rao and Juhi Chawla in the lead roles. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga Movie Review: Anil Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao Pitch in Heart-Warming Performances in Sonam Kapoor’s Unusual Love Story.

All praise for Sonam, LatestLY movie critic Sreeju Sudhakaran has this to say about the actress - "Sonam Kapoor's guts to take on such a role, bold that many may say, has to be appreciated, no doubt. The actress is quite graceful in the scenes that show her silent resilience and torment. However, in the scenes where she has to actively express her emotions, Sonam struggles quite a bit. Still, we hope that this step by Sonam encourages her peers, male and female both, to look beyond conventionality when it comes to roles." Here's taking a look at what other websites and news publications have to say about the unusual love story. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga Celeb Movie Review: Akshay Kumar, Farah Khan and Karan Johar Give This Love Story a Thumbs Up.

The story is simple enough and is told in a manner that could be faulted for being overly chaste - the same-sex lovers embrace a few times but they do not as much as plant a kiss on each other's cheeks, let alone lips - but the film achieves something far bigger than a Bollywood crowd-pleaser can. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is a significant film because of its provenance (it comes from Vidhu Vinod Chopra's production stable) and also because of the support of Bollywood actors who've dared. The warmth and wry wit that the film is couched in makes it that much better.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekhi Toh Aisa Laga concedes the unlikelihood of entertainment to change bigoted minds. When Sweety performs in Sahil’s play, we see disgusted and intolerant audiences get up and leave. Yet I was struck by the image of an old man, sobbing as he leans on the empty bench in front of him, reserved for VIPs who have left. There will be plenty who leave their seats unconvinced, but this film will make some wonder — many of whom may never have considered it. This could have been a bolder and more explicit film, but sometimes cinema should work like a street play. Sometimes we need to preach beyond the choir.

- Hindustan Times

Writer-director Shelly Chopra Dhar and co-writer Gazal Dhaliwal (who previously wrote Irrfan’s 'Qarib Qarib Singlle') manage to spark off some pretty interesting ideas of love. Yes, their film deals with sexuality and seeking acceptance from the older and more-conservative family members, but at the core, 'ELKDTAL' talks about love being a universal feeling, one that cannot be shackled by societal norms and diktats. The writing isn’t all top-grade, but this film has its heart in the right place and sometimes that's all that really matters.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is a precious film. It is an important film for the times we live in. It will not be a blockbuster. But it might just make you change the way you look at love. If you choose to let your 'dil' take precedence over your 'dimaag
