‘Don 3’: Farhan Akhtar Reveals Why He Replaced Shah Rukh Khan With Ranveer Singh, Says ‘I Don’t Think He Has Done a Role Like This’ (Watch Video)

Farhan Akhtar recently appeared on YouTuber Raj Shamani's podcast and discussed several topics, including his upcoming movies and personal life. During the episode, Akhtar also revealed why he chose Ranveer Singh to star in the much-anticipated third instalment of the Don franchise. While Shah Rukh Khan first portrayed the iconic character in the 2006 film Don and returned for Don 2 in 2011, he will not be reprising his role this time. Farhan Akhtar on Casting Ranveer Singh in ‘Don 3’

In his podcast with Raj Shamani, Akhtar explained why he did not do a trilogy with Shah Rukh Khan. He said, "The kind of script that we were writing, what I wanted to do...it's too early to speak about it, so I can't, unfortunately, get into detail. But it needed this next-generation actor in it." Speaking about Ranveer Singh and his qualities as an actor, Akhtar said, "He's just inherently a very charming guy. He's charming; he's mischievous. He's just full of energy, which is what this needs. I feel that when it comes to this aspect of his performance, it's still untapped.

Sharing his curiosity about exploring this side of Ranveer, Akhtar said, "I don't think he's done a role like this. He has always played characters which are, to an extent, with the exception of Lootera. Because of who he is, the characters written for him are very external. They are loud, big characters where he's got the histrionics." Speaking about Ranveer's character in Don 3, he said, "Don requires a different performance from him. There is  a certain holding of everything inside that is needed, which I don't think he has done."

When asked why Shah Rukh Khan didn't reprise his role, Farhan said, "We did try. There were a couple of ideas we exchanged and wrote some stuff also, but somehow either he was excited by something that I didn't feel or that I was excited by something that he didn't feel. You know what I'm talking about. That happens. Sometimes, that synergy on a script doesn't happen. Directed by Farhan Akhtar with Ranveer Singh in the lead roles, Don 3 is reportedly hit the theatres in 2025. Kiara Advani plays the female lead in the upcoming instalment.
