Dil Juunglee Movie Review: Taapsee Pannu and Saqib Saleem's Charming Performances Fail To Save This Weak Romcom, Say Critics

Taapsee Pannu and Saqib Saleem make for an unusual and fresh pairing in one of this week's releases, Saqib Saleem. This romcom might be one of the rare movies, where we got to know who the lead pair is only after the movie has been shot and the makers revealed them through the posters. Taapsee Pannu's hairdo had been a talking point before the release, as people compared it with that of Anne Hathaway's look in The Princess Diaries.

Dil Juunglee is directed by Aleya Sen and is produced by Jackky Bhagnani, Deepshikha Deshmukh, and Mayank Jain. The movie has opened up in theatres but has got poor reviews from the critics who have praised the performances of the lead actors, but blamed the faulty writing and insipid direction for the mess that the movie has become. Here are some of the reviews from popular publications,

Hindustan Times - "Dil Junglee is an age-old story, told with a hundred stereotypes, none of which helps it. It is only Taapsee’s charming presence and Saqib’s earthiness that keep us entertained. Taapsee looks authentic in both the avatars that she dons in the film. Saqib, too, provides ample support with his realistic portrayal of a middle-class Delhi boy. In fact, almost all the actors — Saqib’s mom, his friend, Taapsee’s friend and his fiancée — make the film lively."

Firstpost - "Dil Junglee, a bit like Jab Harry Met Sejal, reminds one of how the huge potential of two talented actors was completely wasted because the filmmakers decided to stick to the same old formulaic and cheesy way of making a typical Bollywood ‘love’ story."

Indian Express - "About the only fresh thing about Dil Juunglee is the name of its lead character. Koroli aka Koro is a new one: the rest of it is same-old and silly. Pannu, who could have saved this creaky thing, is buried under a bad hairdo in the first half. By the time she gets all chic, post interval, it’s much too late. For her, and the film."

NDTV - "Everything about Dil Juunglee is a bit on the wild side, completely arbitrary and illogical. The screenplay does not, for instance, care to explain why Koroli would want to spend as much time as she does with her ex-flame when her life has moved well and truly away from Sumeet's orbit. Of course, the audience knows where the narrative is headed as Koroli and Sumeet loiter around the city, allowing the camera to take in the sights of London. Without any convincing psychological underpinnings to help it along, the romantic drama can only limp and lurch without striking any highs."
