This year, Netflix has given its Indian subscribers some great original gems like Sacred Games and Lust Stories. While the former revolved around stories of the seedy Mumbai underworld, Lust Stories, a collection of four short films, dealt with the forbidden topic of female sexuality in parts. If anyone has watched the Netflix anthology, the scene that may have stood out the most is the one with Kiara Advani’s accidental orgasm. In the segment directed by Karan Johar, the actress plays Megha, a sexually-dissatisfied housewife who discovers the pleasures of the vibrator. In an awkward turn of events, she orgasms in front of her in-laws after the vibrator she had hidden under her sari goes off.
As shocking as the scene was, Kaira received glowing praises for her unabashed and realistic performance. Later in response to all the accolades she received, the actress then told PTI that showing women’s desire on screen is no longer looked upon as a taboo.
Earlier, Swara Bhaskar had also courted controversy for her bold masturbation scene in Veere Di Wedding. These scenes are proof that filmmakers, actors and the audience are growing more open-minded to such taboo topics, which were spoken about in hushed tones. But that’s not the only interesting change these scenes have effected. A per a report by Miss Malini, vibrator and sex toy sales on a popular sex toy website Thaspersonal.com have spiked up. The site calls itself India’s largest online adult sex products store, where enthusiasts can buy sexual paraphernalia for men and women.
The findings are part of the website’s research, which found that the surge in sales coincided with the release of Lust Stories, pointing to a possible connection between the two. If this is true, it could be a sign of changing times where once women were forbidden to express their sexuality. The sales spike of vibrators and sex toys could be a sign that the women in the country are more open to their sexual needs. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
