Chandu Champion Box Office: Kartik Aaryan Scores His Seventh-Highest Opening Weekend But Will That Be Enough?

Chandu Champion, the biopic of India's first Paralympics gold medallist Murlikant Petkar, was released in theatres on June 14. The film, starring Kartik Aaryan in the lead, was directed by Kabir Khan, known for making blockbusters like Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Kabir Khan has found a good success ratio with Salman Khan, though their last film together - Tubelight - underperformed at the box office. Beyond Salman Khan, Kabir Khan's only proper hit was New York, with John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and the late Irrfan Khan. So, will Kartik Aaryan bring back the luck factor for Kabir Khan? Chandu Champion has opened to positive reviews, and its opening weekend was decent enough. The film earned Rs 24.11 crore over its first weekend, with a good growth rate shown on Sunday. With these earnings, Chandu Champion is Kartik's seventh-highest opening weekend grosser till now.

From the above movies, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was a blockbuster, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety was a super-hit. Pati Patni Aur Woh and Luka Chuppi were hits, and Satyaprem Ki Katha was an average grosser. Love Aaj Kal was a flop at the box office.

Two more of the actor's movies —Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 (Rs 22.75 crore) and Shehzada (Rs 20.20 crore)—earned more than Rs 20 crore in their first weekend. While PKP2 was a hit, Shehzada failed at the box office. However, if you look at the whole picture, Kartik Aaryan's films enjoyed a better success rate at the box office when they grossed more than Rs 20 crore during their opening weekend.

So is Chandu Champion on Its Way To Be a Hit?

While most of Kartik Aaryan's films are moderately budgeted, Chandu Champion comes with a reported price tag of Rs 120 crore. Now, we are not sure of these figures - as the producers of Bollywood movies keep such numbers close to their hearts - but if the budget is true, then it is an uphill task for the movie. Chandu Champion has to gross more than Rs 140 crore to be declared a hit at the box office. Road Ahead for Chandu Champion

The film benefits from having Bakri Eid coincide with its first Monday, so hopefully, the collections will see growth here. Chandu Champion also faces tough competition from the previous week's release, Munjya, which recently crossed the Rs 50 crore mark and is still doing well in theatres. The Friday ahead sees the releases of Ishq Vishk Rebound and JNU - Jahangir National University, but neither movie has a major box office pulling star in the cast. So ideally, Chandu Champion should have a smoother road ahead. However, it all depends on how it fares on the weekdays and whether good reviews are actually translating to good footfalls over the next weekend.
