Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, which stars Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Juhi Chawla and Regina Cassandra in the lead, is arriving in theatres tomorrow, February 1. Directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar, the romantic drama has Sonam playing a lesbian in the movie which is mighty impressive because it’s the first time that an A-list Bollywood star will be seen in a same-sex love story on the big screen. Apart from that, it’s also the first time that the Neerja actress is working with her superstar father Anil Kapoor in a film. And therefore the film has managed to generate a lot of curiosity amongst the moviegoers. Since ELKDTAL is a solo release, one would assume that the film would have a smooth run at the box office. However, that may not be the case as Vicky Kaushal’s Uri: The Surgical Strike is currently ruling the box office along with Kangana Ranaut’s period war drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. With two films already minting big money, will Sonam starrer survive at the ticket windows? Will it turn out to be a surprise package at the BO?
Well, we spoke to film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi who said, “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is a movie that’s very relevant in today’s time and that to on a subject which is no longer discussed secretly. Homosexuality as a concept has thankfully seen acceptance and so it’s good to see films being made on it. Plus, the one thing that you need for a movie to do well is the entertainment value. So if that is there in the film then it will turn out to be a huge success no matter what.” Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga Music Review: Melody Drives The Rehashed Songs in Anil, Sonam Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao's Film.
Further, when we asked Akshaye about the opening figures, he stated, “I don’t think it will open very big. It should do around 2 to 3 crore. But it’s the kind of film that will pick up due to good word of mouth and then will eventually end up doing great lifetime numbers. Also, it’s releasing in just 900 cinemas across India and that should be taken into consideration while looking at the box office numbers. But as I said earlier, it looks like a film that has the potential to do very well on the basis of its merit.”
“It may not do as big as Uri but it could do more business than a film like Andhadhun.”
