What a hit and run case involving human lives couldn't do, a couple of slain deer did. Or rather a whole community who considered those deer as sacred did. Salman Khan had been convicted by the Jodhpur Court for the 1998 blackbuck poaching case. He has been sentenced by court for a five year sentence and Rs 10000 fine and he will be spending a night in the Jodhpur jail before his legal team can work a bail for him. The rest of the co-accused, Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam, who were with Salman on that night of the hunting, were let off by the court due to weak evidence.

As Salman Khan prepares to go to jail, the members of the Bishnoi community, a proud and powerful sect in Rajasthan are celebrating the court judgement by dancing and bursting crackers. After all it was their dedicated fight to bring the convicted Salman to the law and get the punishment, that made them see this day even it took 20 years to happen.

Meanwhile speaking to ANI, Rampal Bhawad, State President, Bishnoi Tigers Vanya Evam Paryavaran Sanstha, conveyed that there is more to do, as they are not exactly happy about the judgement. Their grouse is that rest of the accused got away. He said, "We'll analyse the judgement. We want an immediate appeal to be filed against those who have been acquitted and we also demand maximum punishment for Salman Khan."

Salman was facing charges under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and the other actors have been charged under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code. Public Prosecutor Bhawani Singh Bhati had said that all (Salman, Saif, Sonali, Tabu and Neelam) were in a Gypsy car that night, with Salman Khan in the driving seat.

All said and done, we do wonder if human lives were also fought with similar conviction as that of animals and perhaps some crimes would never have gone unpunished. What say, are you unhappy with the judgement or do you think justice has been served?
