Bhagat Singh 112th Birth Anniversary: From Shammi Kapoor to Ajay Devgn – Bollywood Actors Who Have Played the Role of the Revolutionary Freedom Fighter

Bhagat Singh, born in a Sikh family on September 28, 1907, was the revolutionary freedom fighter of our country. He was born into a family who was politically active. As a teenager he studied European revolutionary movements. Bhagat Singh, fearless fighter, is one of the prominent names in the Indian freedom struggle. He was the youngest fighters in the freedom struggle and hence he is often referred as the youth icon. There are many filmmakers who have managed to bring forth the story of this brave-heart on the big screens. Some of the renowned actors of Bollywood essayed the role of this legendary freedom fighter. From Shammi Kapoor to Ajay Devgn, let’s take a look at the actors who played the role of freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh.

Shammi Kapoor

Shammi Kapoor played the role of the fearless freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in the 1963 film Shaheed Bhagat Singh. He was one of those actors who had the image of a romantic and dancing hero, but for Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Kapoor underwent major transformation. Although the movie did not turned out to be a blockbuster, his look and performance was praised.

Manoj Kumar

Manoj Kumar played the role of the patriotic hero in the 1965 film Shaheed. His role was not only promising, but that film also won three National Awards.

Bobby Deol

Bobby Deol starrer 23rd March 1931: Shaheed that released in June 2002. There were two other films released based on the revolutionary freedom fighter’s struggle, however it was this Guddu Dhanoa directorial that stood out to be different. It also featured Sunny Deol as Chandra Shekhar Azad.

Ajay Devgn

Ajay Devgn’s performance as Bhagat Singh in Rajkumar Santoshi’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh was well received by fans and critics.  In fact, Devgn even won National Film Award for Best Actor and the biopic also bagged National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

Sonu Sood

Sonu Sood was featured in Sukumar Nair’s Shaheed-E-Azam that also released in June 2002. He portrayed the character of Bhagat Singh in the film. Sonu who is a Punjabi, left everyone impressed with his avatar.

The words of Bhagat Singh will always be remembered – “My life has been dedicated to the noblest cause, that of the freedom of the country. Therefore, there is no rest or worldly desire that can lure me now.” It was definitely not easy for these Bollywood actors to portray the character of Bhagat Singh on the big screens.
