AndhaDhun Movie Review: Ayushmann Khurrana Matches Up To A Terrific Tabu in Sriram Raghavan's Darkly Humorous Thriller!
If you are the ones that want to watch AndhaDhun unadulterated, kindly STOP reading ahead! And if you do, don't blame us from spoiling the fun for you, especially if you haven't seen the film. Now with the disclaimers out, here are the seven terrific twists in AndhaDhun that calls for a toast to Raghavan's twisted mind!
The Hero is Not Blind
Though the trailer gave us some hints about it, it is revealed that Ayushmann Khurrana's blind pianist Aakash is not blind after all. But that's not the surprise factor. AndhaDhun actually reveals this twist within 10 minutes of the film. It works big time, because of the next scene.
The Murder Scene
You had seen the glimpses of this scene in the trailer, but the promo gives you no clue how crazy the whole setup. The pretending-to-be-blind Aakash lands on the doorsteps of faded star Pramod Sinha (Anil Dhawan) to play the piano for his wedding anniversary with Simi (Tabu). Simi opens the door and reluctantly lets Aakash him. As he plays the piano, he finds the dead body of Pramod in the living room and Simi's lover (Manav Vij) in the bathroom. It leads to a hilarious whimsical sequence where Aakash plays the piano, reacting as if he hasn't seen anything, while Simi acts as if her husband has returned home and her lover, who turns out to be a cop later, is trying to dump the body. Easily, the best scene of the year!
Aakash Lands At the Same Time as the Second Murder
Aakash has the bad luck of turning up at the wrong place at the wrong time. When Simi's elderly neighbour has suspicions about the death of Pramod, Simi kills her by pushing her from the building to her death below. Aakash lands up at the same time on their floor, to give piano lessons to Pramod's daughter, only to act again as if he hasn't seen anything.
Aakash Goes Blind For Real
A suspicious Simi goes to Aakash's house and tricks him into confessing that he is not blind (he was doing an experiment to enhance his music). That's not the only trick she pulls off. The devious Simi also drugs him and somehow makes him go blind for real this time. To add insult to injury, she also convinces his girlfriend Sophie (Radhika Apte) that they are sleeping together.
Simi's Lover's Unknown Fate
A blind but vengeful Aakash convinces a creepy doctor (Zakir Hussain), who indulges in illegal organ trade, and his two aides to help him take revenge on Simi and her lover with the promise of Rs 1 crore ransom. He kidnaps Simi and then exposes the cop's affair to his wife while blackmailing them for Rs 1 crore, which he thinks the cop has taken from Pramod (he hadn't in fact). At the instigation of his wife, the cop goes to a dilapidated building where the ransom was supposed to be exchanged. While he fatally injures one of the aides, the cop gets trapped in a lift before the lights are turned out and he accidentally shoots himself in the dark. His final fate is never shown.
The Peter Rabbit Sequence
The movie begins with a blind hare trying to escape from a farmer who is trying to shoot him down. We hear the farmer press the trigger, the sound of the gun working and then some crash noises. Later in the movie, Aakash and the creepy doc put a drugged out Simi in the trunk of a car and they go for a drive where the doc reveals hat Simi's organs can fetch them lots of money, while also Aakash the cornea to cure his blindness. However, Simi manages to attack the doc and drive away with the car. She later tries to kill Aakash but the hare from the opening scene jumps on her car, leading her to crash it in panic and gets killed.
The Cliffhanger
The scene explained prior is retold by a blind Aakash to Sophie when they meet in London two years later. In her anger towards Simi, Sophie tells Aakash that he should have allowed the doctor to operate on her(Aakash tells her that he wasn't on doctor's plans, which later helped Simi escape). However, Aakash is seen later showing a can on the road away, leading us to question if he is really blind. Or if the flashback story did happen? Or did he really take the money and the corneas from Simi? What an Inception ending!
