One of the biggest name to surface in the wake of the #MeToo movement as an alleged sexual predator is Alok Nath, known as 'sasnkari bapu' in pop culture. A writer-director who worked with him closely in the '90s on a TV show has accused him of rape and harassment. Nath’s lawyer Ashok Sarogi, in a press conference on Thursday, had refuted the allegations and said they were baseless and devoid of any merit. As per a report by ANI, Alok has already filed a defamation suit on the writer-director. Now, Alok's wife, too, will be filing a defamation suit asking for a compensation of Re 1, reports suggest.
As per a report by Times Of India, Alok's wife, Ashu, has moved Andheri magistrate court. She has said in her complaint, filed through her lawyer, Ashok, that since the allegations it has become difficult for the couple to move out freely in public as people look at them with "different attitude". Himani Shivpuri on Alok Nath: Some Things are Open Secret in the Industry.
As for the compensation amount of Re 1, we can only assume that it is merely symbolic for the couple. Ashu told the court about the complaint that had been submitted to Amboli police station on Friday. She added that the couple felt that since the offences were non-cognizable, they were unable to obtain cognisance without a court order.
Post the first allegations on Alok, many more women have come out and levelled accusations of sexual misconduct on him. Sandhya Mridul has alleged that, years ago, he arrived drunk to her hotel room and demanded to be let in. Alok's frequent collaborator Himani Shivpuri has also talked about a similar offence. Deepika Amin, an actress, has also come out and accused him of sexual misconduct.
