Akshay Kumar's Gold or John Abraham's Satyameva Jayate: Which Movie Won The Box Office Race? Here's The Truth!
It is not easy to analyse who is the real winner in the Independence Day box office clash between Gold and Satyameva Jayate.
It is not easy to analyse who is the real winner in the Independence Day box office clash between Gold and Satyameva Jayate. The two movies came out on August 15 and took off to a blazing start at the box office. As per the last box office update, Gold has collected Rs 75.3 crore in its 7-day run in the theatres (source: Bollywood Hungama). Gold is directed by Reema Kagti and stars Akshay Kumar in the lead, with Mouni Roy, Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Vineet Kumar Singh and Sunny Kaushal.
As for Satyameva Jayate, the movie stars John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee in the leads, with newcomer Aisha Sharma cast as the female lead. Milap Zaveri, the writer of movies like Kaante and Jhankar Beats and director of Mastizaade, has helmed this social action thriller. As per the last update, the movie has collected Rs 60 crore at the box office in the same amount of time as Gold.
Going by the collections, of course, it is Gold that has the lead with a Rs 15 crore difference. Compared to Satyameva Jayate, it also got better reviews. However, whether the makers want to accept it or not, the movie is struggling at the box office. This is a film starring Akshay Kumar, who is considered hot box office property and he has clear domination during national holiday releases. We only need to see how easily Toilet - Ek Prem Katha, Airlift and Rustom have performed when they came out in the theatres. Gold is clearly struggling to reach the Rs 100 crore mark at the domestic box office, something Akshay's last film, Pad Man, also failed to do. With Eid holiday on August 22, there is a chance that Gold might do better on the holiday. Also, the budget of the film is estimated to be Rs 85 crore so there's that!
Talking about Satyameva Jayate, the movie had a couple of disadvantages to star with. Unlike Gold which got a clean U rating, SM was certified A thanks to its violent nature, thereby alienating children and family audiences. It also got far poorer reviews than Satyameva Jayate. However, the budget of the film is lesser than that of Gold, with an estimate of Rs 50 crore. Which makes Satyameva Jayate in profit right now.
So when it comes to collection, it is Gold who has taken the lead of course. But when it comes to making profits within the constraints, it is Satyameva Jayate who looks to be the winner here.
That said and done, there are accusations that the producers of both the movies are inflating the figures to show they are better than the other. Some of the trade analysts have stopped tweeting the box office figures of both the films, as they don't feel credible. So all the above analysis is based on what collections the producers have provided. The truth could really be a different beast altogether!
