Seeing how movies have been performing these days and how records are being broken by some very unexpected films, it is high time that we look at how we see the profitability of a film. No longer can Rs 100 crore or a Rs 200 crore be a benchmark for the fact that the film is a hit or not. The main reason for this being some of the biggies actually cost more than Rs 100 crore these days (production plus marketing costs). But there are certain trade sources and fans who continue to obsess with the Rs 100 crore camps, so let's break the myth as to if every film entering the club turn out to be profitable. Thugs of Hindostan Box Office: Why The Cold Reception to Aamir Khan's Film Is Making Us Worried For Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar's 2.0.

In 2018, we have 11 films in Bollywood earning that distinction when it comes to domestic box office. Of course, the highest grossing film has to be Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju, followed by Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor's Padmaavat, both being proud entrants of the Rs 300 crore club. Thankfully their budgets are lower, so they did earn profits too. The most recent entrant to the Rs 100 crore club happens to be Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif's Thugs of Hindostan. But is the movie really profitable?

Or for that matter, is Sanju the most profitable film of the year? If we look at collections-wise, then yes. But if we consider the net profit margin (percentage of revenue remaining after all costs have been deducted from total revenue), then it is Rajkummar Rao's Stree that has been the most profitable, followed by Ayushmann Khurrana's Badhaai Ho!

In this feature, we looked at the business done by the 11 Rs 100 crore grossers of 2018 (till now) and determined which of these movies earned the maximum profit. Here are our findings, ranking them from the most profitable to the least (actually, in this case, it's in a loss) -

Stree

Badhaai Ho

Sanju

Raazi

Baaghi 2

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety

Race 3

Raid

Padmaavat

Gold

Thugs of Hindostan

Yes, that's in minus! Though the movie is still in theatres, trade experts have all given up hope on the film to even reach Rs 200 crore. Considering the high budget of the film, we cannot even call the film profitable in any sense (at least in box office terms)
