Nowadays any movie to click at the box office, it has to first click on social media. And for that, it has to create a huge impression with its promotional material. The biggest tool for that is the trailer. We won't be wrong in saying that it is the trailers that make or break the film and if they are not strong enough, the buzz won't be right when the movie releases in theatres. Thugs of Hindostan Box Office Day 5: Aamir Khan's Film Crashes On Its First Monday; Collects Rs 129 Crore

Take, for example, this year's Race 3 and Thugs of Hindostan. Both were big movies with big stars in the cast, When they were announced, high expectations were riding on the films. Then the trailers came in and people were left either disappointed or annoyed, which later played a hand in the underwhelming box office collections. Thugs of Hindostan

The Hype: A pirate saga featuring Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Don't lie that you weren't excited about this!

What Went Wrong in Trailer: To be fair, the trailer of the film wasn't exactly bad. Only that it wasn't good either and considering the film had Aamir Khan in the lead and was considered Bollywood's costliest film to date, we expected better. Not Pirates of the Caribbean's disowned cousin.

The Lowest Point: Aamir trying to capture Jack Sparrow's spirit.

Film's BO Performance: The film has the highest opening day collections for an Indian film to date. But its box office performance suffered so badly from the second day itself, both in India and overseas, that even its stars refused to promote the film after its release. Costing Rs 300 crore (arguably), TOH ended up collected Rs 129 crore in just five days, and finding it difficult to even cross the Rs 150 crore mark in India.

Race 3

The Hype: Salman Khan in a Race franchise. Yes, we were disappointed that Saif Ali Khan had to be sacrificed. But Salman Khan in a Race franchise.

What Went Wrong in Trailer: Ditching the thriller elements of the previous films, director Remo D'Souza focused more on the action scenes raising the bar of ridiculousness with many scenes, many of them becoming memes.

The Lowest Point: "Our Business is Our Business, None of Your Business!"

Film's BO Performance: Thanks to its masala genre and hype, Race 3 took off to a flying start collecting Rs 100 crore in three days only. However, the movie was so bad that even Bhai fans slammed it. While Tiger Zinda Hai, that came a few months before, grossed more than Rs 300 crore, Race 3 had to make do with around Rs 160 crore, while battling allegations that the collections have been inflated.

What Went Wrong in Trailer: First of all, the title (thanks to Ranbir Kapoor who suggested it) felt very uninspired and boring. Wrong start. Then the makers didn't even bother to release proper trailer at first. Instead, making do with mini trails, before

The Lowest Point: The Jab We Met Hangover throughout the trailer

Film's BO Performance: When a Shah Rukh Khan film fails to even gross more than Rs 70 crore in India, you know things are really bad!

Tubelight

The Hype: A Salman Khan film that reunited him with director Kabir Khan, who gave Bhai two blockbusters in Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai

What Went Wrong in Trailer: The trailer of Tubelight showed that Salman Khan wanting to try a different genre. However, fans were not ready to see Bhai looking so helpless and bullied, with younger brother Sohail taking on the more protective role.

The Lowest Point: Salman clearly not comfortable playing the man-child.

Film's BO Performance: While the film did take advantage of the Eid holiday and entered the Rs 100 crore club, it remains Salman's lowest grossing film to date. The producers might have made a profit but the distributors end up suffering big losses.

Mohenjo Daro

The Hype: A prehistorical adventure drama that reunites Hrithik Roshan and Oscar-nominated Ashutosh Gowariker

What Went Wrong in Trailer: Mohenjo Daro began to get trolled ever since the posters came out, with debutante Pooja Hegde's colourful costume getting the maximum flak. The trailer also didn't do much to increase our confidence as it did little justice to the period in which the film is set, while presenting a regular revenge drama.

The Lowest Point: The fake crocodile

In Theatres: While the movie took off to a decent start, released during an Independence Day week, Mohenjo Daro's business dwindled over the days ahead collecting only Rs 58 crore in India. It didn't help matters that Mohenjo Daro released along with Akshay Kumar's Rustom, who gained a big upper hand at the box office.
