On June 25, 2019, one of Indian cinema's biggest superstars has completed 27 years of his movie journey. Technically, Shah Rukh Khan had made his acting debut in the 1987 telefilm, In Which Annie Gives It To Those Ones, and he was a popular face on television during the '80s and early '90s thanks to serials like Fauji, Doosra Kewal and Circus. But Shah Rukh Khan's mainstream movie career began with the 1992 film Deewana that was directed by Raj Kanwar. Abbas-Mustan's Baazigar made a star out of SRK, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge elevated him to the status of superstar, making him the darling of the masses and the classes. Shah Rukh Khan Celebrates 27 Years in Bollywood Tomorrow but Twitterati is Already Busy Celebrating His Golden Run.
Now 27 years later, Shah Rukh Khan has had quite an eventful journey. There have been illustrious highs, there have been scary lows. In fact, Shah Rukh Khan is currently going through one of the leanest phases in his career, with his last couple of films failing badly at the box office. With him taking an extended break from acting and spending more time with his family, we will have to wait for some more time to see another SRK movie on the screen. Although, you can get to hear him (and his son, Aryan) in the upcoming Hindi version of The Lion King remake. After The Incredibles, Shah Rukh Khan and Aryan Khan Reunite Once Again for The Lion King.
So while we wait for King Khan to announce his next, let's celebrate his 27th anniversary of him being a Bollywood icon by going through 27 of his iconic scenes in his movies.
#1 Deewana
The Scene: His Entry
...and thus, through the song "Koi Na Koi Chahiye", Shah Rukh Khan zoomed through the streets of Mumbai and into our hearts!
#2 Baazigar
The Scene: What else....RIP Shilpa Shetty
...Or the scene that turned SRK from a hero to an anti-hero!
#3 Darr
The Scene: K...K...K...Kiran!
When Kiran finally realised that the man who has been tormenting her for years was 'that quiet boy from college'!
#4 Karan Arjun
The Scene: 'Bhai' With His Bhai
Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan had an incredible camaraderie, both on and off the screen. This iconic song just gave us that hint way back in the '90s.
#5 Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
The Scene: Jaa Simran Jaa...Jee Lee Apni Zindagi!
Sure, he could have pulled the chain, but that would have ruined the poetic reunion where the lovers get together against various odds!
#6 Dil To Pagal Hai
The Scene: Aur Paas
This scene has been spoofed quite a lot these days, but the raging passion between SRK and Madhuri Dixit is just off the roof here!
#7 Dil Se...
The Scene: Dancing on the Train
From the moment this song, composed by AR Rahman and choreographed by Farah Khan, hit our television screens, we knew we have an evergreen classic in our hands. Trivia: The Denzel Washington thriller Inside Man borrowed this song for its opening sequence. With due credit, of course!
#8 Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
The Scene: That Dance!
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have incredible chemistry, and Karan Johar used that to the best effect in this lovely scene.
#9 Hey Ram
The Scene: The Pathan
Shah Rukh Khan may have a cameo in Kamal Haasan's ambitious, if underrated, debut directorial. But he delivers one of his finest performance in the film, especially in his brutal death sequence.
#10 Josh
The Scene: Max!
Josh is a very middling, forgettable remake of Hollywood classic, West Side Story. But Shah Rukh Khan's aggressive, whistle-worthy entry scene in this Mansoor Khan film is quite hard to forget!
#11 Mohabbatein
The Scene: The Climax Confrontation
When two powerhouse performers face off, there is bound to be lightning and thunder. This scene has both, literally and metaphorically!
#12 Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...
The Scene: Reuniting With His Mother
Karan Johar's speciality is executing scenes that have minimal dialogues yet have volumes of emotions. Like this wonderfully dramatic reunion scene between SRK and Jaya Bachchan's characters.
#13 Devdas
The Scene: The Death
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's take on Sarat Chandra's classic work is filled with eye-pleasing visuals and wonderful performances. The climax of the film is poetically tragic and beautifully directed, as Paro runs towards the dying Devdas, but the doors literally close on her before she could meet him.
#14 Kal Ho Naa Ho
The Scene: The Diary
From amusing to angry confrontation to heartbreaking, just how seamlessly this one scene transitions through various emotions!
#15 Main Hoon Na
The Scene: "Chand Mera Dil"
Okay, SRK just stole the song from our lips when we saw the lovely Sushmita Sen in that beautiful saree!
#16 Veer-Zaara
The Scene: The Climax Speech
The late Yash Chopra's ode to timeless love has some very beautiful dialogues. Like the poetry that SRK's Veer recites in the climax of this love story.
#17 Swades
The Scene: The Silent Anguish
Shah Rukh Khan can express a lot with his eyes. Ashutosh Gowariker uses that to perfection to depict a silent anguish when Mohan Bhargava, SRK's character, gets a reality check.
#18 Don – The Chase Begins Again
The Scene: The Twist
Come on, who expected this one when you saw Don for the very first time? Well, I didn't!
#19 Chak De! India
The Scene: Sattar Minute
Chak De! India is filled with some very iconic scenes. But the emotions that are contained in this rousing motivational locker-room scene overwhelm your senses!
#20 Om Shanti Om
The Scene: The Six Packs!
Sure, Salman Khan may have gotten that bandwagon rolling, but King Khan definitely glamorised it.
#21 My Name Is Khan
The Scene: Exposing a Charlatan
In a very socially relevant sequence in the current times, SRK's character, who is afflicted with Asperger's syndrome, exposes a charlatan who is inciting Muslim anger. Just by telling the story the way it is.
#22 Ra.One
The Scene: The Train Stunt
Ra.One may have been a very forgettable superhero film. But SRK's commitment in making it visually brilliant is evident, especially in this terrific train stunt sequence. PS: "Chammak Challo" almost made it here!
#23 Chennai Express
The Scene: Lungi Dance
Easily, the most memorable part of this romantic comedy, though a little racist too!
#24 Dilwale
The Scene: "Gerua"
Say what you want about Rohit Shetty's ventures with Shah Rukh Khan, but at least, he gives King Khan fans one of the most beautifully picturised songs, featuring his fave onscreen heroine, Kajol!
#25 Fan
The Scene: When Fan Meets His Idol
An underrated SRK film, thanks to some weird writing in the second half, FAN, nonetheless, has some memorable scenes. Like the above one, where the fan meets his idol for the first time. Don't say that you cannot relate to the euphoria he is going through here!
#26 Raees
The Scene: That 'Smoky' Entry
Sure this may not be his intro scene, but this is the most badass sequence of SRK in the film. So much that the even the first promo built up the hype on it!
#27 Zero
The Scene: "Mera Naam Tu" Song
Zero may have divided Bollywood fans and underperformed at the box office. But can anyone deny the beauty of this above song, mellifluously composed and sung, using SRK's charm at its fullest?
