Andaz Apna Apna, considered as one of the greatest comedies made in Bollywood, is clocking 25 years today. Starring Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon in the lead, the movie was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Andaz Apna Apna is such a cult movie that even the supporting characters like Teja/Ram Gopal Bajaj (Paresh Rawal), Crime Master Gogo (Shakti Kapoor), Robert (Viju Khote), Bhalla (Shehzad Khan) and Anand Akela (Javed Khan) have got cult status. Even the dialogues have been received the same recognition, even making their ways to captions of T-shirts. But 25 years back, this kind of popularity was nowhere to be seen when Andaz Apna Apna released in theatres. The movie's theatrical release was on November 4, 1994. Andaz Apna Apna, despite starring four big names in the lead, failed to attract the crowds then. But over the years, the movie, through cable reruns and online streaming, has gained the kind of popularity that no flop film in Bollywood has gained before. What makes Andaz Apna Apna tick even after so many years is that the film is actually funny, using the comic talents of the cast brilliantly and provides clean comedy in the process. Bar for a couple of jokes here and there, Andaz Apna Apna has also aged pretty well, which you cannot say for sure about rest of its ilk from the same year. The movie also has plenty of meta jokes and references, that you need to watch the film a few times to catch them all. In this special feature, let's look at the popular celebs who made cameos or were name-dropped in the film for fun's sake.
Juhi Chawla
The actress had a cameo in the film playing herself in a dream sequence involving Amar (Aamir Khan).
Juhi's Cameo in the Film:
She is also mentioned when Johnny (Mehmood) is trying to dupe Prem (Salman Khan) into thinking that she will be the second heroine in a film that Johnny will launch with Prem.
Govinda
The actor also makes a hilarious cameo in the same sequence, playing himself.
During the shoot with Juhi, his attempts to hug her creates pangs of jealousy in Amar.
Madhuri Dixit
Madhuri Dixit is referenced twice in the film. Once, when Johnny fools Prem into thinking that Madhuri will be the first heroine in the movie.
The second time she is referenced when Amar and Prem reach Ooty, and Prem tries to show Raveena's (Raveena Tandon) picture to him, and Amar trolls him by asking if he wants to marry Madhuri Dixit (whose Cineblitz cover is placed above Raveena's).
Subhash Ghai
The sequence where Johnny is trying to hoodwink Prem, he claims that he will bring Subhash Ghai as the director. At that time, Ghai was one of the most sought-after directors having made back-to-back blockbusters like Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak etc.
Amitabh Bachchan
Johnny dropping big names as a part of his 'film' should have sounded as a red flag for Prem, but the naive wannabe is too immersed in his Bollywood dreams to take note.
Otherwise, why would Amitabh Bachchan, who was sort of retired then but was still playing lead roles, would play father to Prem? However, years later, Amitabh Bachchan played Salman's foster father in Baghban and real father in Baabul.
Shah Rukh Khan
The dream sequence with Juhi has a jealous Prem stutter while calling her, making the latter wince in shock, claiming she thought Shah Rukh Khan is around.
This is in reference to Darr, that came a year before in 1993, that had Shah Rukh Khan play a stuttering stalker who terrorised Juhi's character in the cult film.
Sunny Deol
Another actor who gets name-dropped in the same scene is Sunny Deol. Amar claims that Juhi is doing too many films with Sunny, and she says that people are liking their jodi.
At that time, Sunny and Juhi had romanced each other in films like Darr, Lootere, and Izzat Ki Roti.
Salim Khan
The screenplaywright of films like Sholay, Deewar, Mr India etc is not mentioned directly in the film, but there is a meta nod to the legend.
When Akela asks Amar and Prem if they have seen Sholay, Prem says yes. To which, Amar jibes that his father had written it. This is a meta nod to the fact that Salim Khan is Salman's father.
Danny Denzongpa
Danny Denzongpa is name-dropped in a dialogue that is considered racist in the current times.
In one scene, Amar refers to a waiter with North-Easter features as 'Batla Danny'. Well, Amar wasn't exactly known to be very political!
