Director Kabir Khan and Bollywood star Ranveer Singh have joined hands to make an epic callback film based on India's first World Cup win in 1983. Ranveer Singh is playing Kapil Dev, the former Indian all-rounder, who had captained the Indian team to an astounding win against the mighty West Indies (then) in the finals and get the Cup. BTW, the movie is also called 1983. This is also an opportunity for Kabir Khan to wash away the bad memories of his last release, Tubelight.
They have not started working yet on the movie, so it would be stupid to expect 1983 to come out anytime soon. Well, the release date is finally out, and the movie is all set to release on April 10, 2020, as per trade analyst Taran Adarsh. Yup, that's two long years. The date also happens to be coming on the holiday of Good Friday, so that's a box office advantage. Here's what Taran Adarsh had tweeted, "#BreakingNews: Ranveer Singh and director Kabir Khan... #1983 to release on 10 April 2020 [Good Friday]... #Reliance #Phantom #VishnuInduri... #Relive83". Nawazuddin Siddiqui is, reportedly, playing Kapil Dev's coach in the movie.
Earlier in an interview to Indian Express, Kabir had this to say about why he wanted to direct 1983, "Once in a lifetime you get a story when every pore of your body screams to tell the story. This is that story in my life. This is a story which should never be forgotten. For me, it’s a great responsibility. I want to make my son feel as proud of the team as I did back then as a schoolboy."
In the same interview, Ranveer shared his enthusiasm for being a part of the project. He had said,"It came as a huge surprise to me when Kabir sir started narrating the story. It was so surprising to learn the odds against which these gentlemen had to fight against for the greatest sports triumph. More than a great sports story, it’s a great human story."
