Back in 2016, 20th Century Fox played host to the first ever Alien Day, a global celebration of the franchise that took place on the fitting date of April 26.

Alien Day was originally conceived as a tribute to the Alien sci-fi franchise, but these days it is often an excuse to celebrate all things extra-terrestrial. The idea of proclaiming April 26 as Alien Day was inspired by the name of the moon on which the first movie, Alien, is partly set – LV426. Back in 2016, 20th Century Fox played host to the first ever Alien Day, a global celebration of the franchise that took place on the fitting date of April 26. The event officially became an annual tradition last year and this year once again Alien Day is taking place on April 26.

1 Aliens, 1986

Aliens is an American sci-fi action film written and directed by James Cameron. It is a sequel to the 1979 film Alien. The film follows Sigourney Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley as she returns to the moon where her crew encountered the hostile Alien creature, this time accompanied by a unit of space marines.

2 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, 1982

Directed by Steven Spielberg, E.T. tells the story of Elliot, a lonely boy who befriends an extra-terrestrial dubbed ‘E.T.’ who is stranded on Earth. Elliot and his siblings help E.T. return to his home planet, while attempting to keep him hidden from their mother and the government.

3 Independence Day, 1996

Considered to be a significant turning point in the history of the Hollywood blockbuster, Independence Day became the highest grossing (817 million dollars worldwide) film of 1996. The film focuses on disparate groups of people who converge in the Nevada desert in the aftermath of a worldwide attack by an extra-terrestrial race. With the other people of the world, they launch a last-ditch counterattack on July 4 – Independence Day in the United States.

4 Avatar, 2009

The epic sci-fi film directed by James Cameron is set in the mid-22nd century, when humans are colonizing Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centaury star system to mine a room-temperature superconductor. The expanse of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe. The film broke all records at the box-office and became the highest grossing film of all time surpassing Cameron’s Titanic which had held those records for twelve years.

5 Signs, 2002

Directed M. Night Shyamalan, the movie’s focuses on a former priest named Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) who discovers a series of crop circles in his cornfield. Hess slowly discovers that he phenomenon is a result of extra-terrestrial life. Signs explores faith, kinship and extra-terrestrials.

While there are some who don’t believe in the existence of the aliens, to many the idea is fascinating. There are many celebrities who also believe in the race unknown to us earthlings. Singer Zayn Malik claimed that he decided to leave the band One Direction after an alien spoke to him in a dream. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande and Katy Perry both freely admit to being obsessed with aliens.
