Sidharth Malhotra had a debut that many aspiring actors can only dream about - getting a lead role in a Karan Johar movie. Student of The Year, that released in 2012, gave Sidharth Malhotra a glitzy launchpad with co-debutantes Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. It launched him into A-league and made him one of the most sought after actors in the industry. It also helped his case a lot when rumours of him dating his SOTY co-star Alia Bhatt made quite a lot of waves (even their rumoured recent breakup too). However, while he did make news for his love life, Sidharth Malhotra's movie career tells a different story. Actually, it's no great shakes.
Looking back at his career, Sidharth Malhotra's has only delivered two big hits after his debut movie, Student of the Year. One being, Ek Villain - his only Rs 100 crore grosser movie till date and Kapoor & Sons. All the remaining flicks are either flops or average performers. Some of his biggest box office disappointments have been Baar Baar Dekho, A Gentleman and the recently released Aiyaary. Aiyaary's failure is a real-deal-breaker since it may lead to trade experts now reconsidering their bets on this good-looking actor, accused of being a performer of limited acting capabilities.
Let's look at all the misses in his career, that spans only nine movies,
Hasee Toh Phasee

Baar Baar Dekho

Aiyaary

Sidharth has never seen a hit since Kapoor & Sons, a movie where Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt get more credit than him. Even in Ek Villain, it was Riteish Deshmukh's negative character and the music that got more appreciation than him, but that's a matter for another discussion. On the other hand his SOTY-costars Varun and Alia are going great guns with their Bollywood careers. Varun, in fact, has never seen a box office flop yet in his career.
Coming back to Sidharth's career, with Aiyaary's dismal failure, it is hard to see how he can bounce back from these strings of flops. He also doesn't have any confirmed releases yet, though there are talks that he will play the lead in the Captain Vikram Batra's biopic and Ek Villain 2. We have to see if the makers of both these movies go ahead and announce their movies, despite Aiyaary's disappointing box office performance. Even his mentor Karan Johar, while supporting his endeavors (Karan even gave Aiyaary a 'glowing' review), hasn't announced a movie with Sidharth yet. That's not the case with Varun and Alia, though. Karan has just announced Rannbhoomi with Varun in the lead, while Alia is in Raazi, another of his co-productions.
So where does that leave Sidharth? As of now, the actor has to be very careful with the roles that he takes up, at least for the sake of his innumerable female fans.
