The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is the third largest national political party in India in terms of voteshare. The party has a prime electoral presence in Uttar Pradesh, where it has been in power twice. Ideologically, the BSP is committed to affirmative action (reservation), social justice, secularism and socialism. The party was founded in 1984 by Kanshiram. In 2001, he appointed Mayawati as his successor. The BSP had secured 22% votes in the UP assembly elections 2017. Electorally, however, it translated to victories only in 19 of the 403 constituencies of the state. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the party had suffered a clear rout with all its candidates being defeated.
