Beaver County, May 20: Tenaris S.A., a Luxembourg-based global manufacturer and supplier of steel pipes and related services, has announced that it will reduce its workforce in US's Beaver County, Brookfield and Ohio. The largest concentration of Tenaris layoffs will be seen in company's heat treatment and finishing lines in Koppel, said a report.

According to a report by The Times, Tenaris layoffs would affect a combined 170 employees working at the Tenaris facilities in Beaver County, Ohio, and Brookfield. As per the report, the company representatives said, "The company’s heat treatment and finishing lines in Koppel will see the largest concentration of layoffs". Rockwell Automation Layoffs: US-Based Automation and Digital Transformation Company To Cut 3% of Staff To Save USD 100 Million, CFO Announces His Retirement.

The report highlighted that the Koppel's facility had been producing seamless oil-country tubular goods, drill pipes and lineups which are used in the oil and natural gas industry. During Covid-19, Tenaris had suspended the operations at its Koppel and Harmony Township facilities due to the adverse market conditions. Then, the company laid off hundreds of employees. The report said that the steelmaker later had brought both these plants back online in 2021. It also mentioned that the company had invested around $15 million to upgrade the Koppel shop.

On May 7, 2020, Tenaris mentioned laying off nearly 135 employees in Canada due to an unprecedented situation. The company said it would take difficult decisions to lay off some employees in Canada at Prudential facility. The steelmaker said that the Tenaris layoffs would help it maintain a long-term solid position and allow it to continue contributing towards a healthy domestic manufacturing industry in the country. Back then, even after the layoffs at Tenaris, the company is said to work with the rest of the industry in Canada and with the government to defend against the high level of imports.

The latest round of Tenaris layoffs in 2024 is said to be related to an influx in the oil-country tubular goods or OTCG imports to the US. The report by The Times mentioned that the OTCG referred to the piping products used in oil and gas production. Tenaris reportedly said the imports were manufactured in China and shipped through Korea, Thailand and Taiwan. It mentioned that these countries do not have drilling activity nor produce OTCG for exports. Layoffs Due to AI: Godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton Expresses His Concern Over Job Losses Due to Artificial Intelligence, Tells Government To Establish ‘Universal Basic Income’ for Affected.

The Tenaris leadership said to monitor market conditions and mitigate the "operations impacts". The Europe-based steelmaker said it would remain committed to US manufacturing and advance ongoing investments in the Koppel steel shop.
