The US-based aviation giant announced in October 2024 that it would lay off thousands of employees, around 10% of its global workforce, to stay competitive, reduce inefficiencies due to overstaffing. Now, the layoffs officially begin, and the employees affected by this decision will leave the company in January 2025.
Boeing layoffs, one of the largest in the aviation industry, will affect 17,000 employees globally. According to a report by Fox Business, the job cuts were announced after a labour union strike that included 10% of the staff. Boeing said it would adjust the workforce levels to align with its financial reality. In turn, this would help the company focus on a set of priorities. Being's newly appointed CEO, Kelly Ortberg, informed the staff members about the decision by sending a memo last month. It included that the Boeing layoffs would affect roles like managers, employees, and executives. He further added that the company's aviation business was in a difficult position, and it was hard to overstate the challenges it faced.
Kelly Ortberg further explained that tough decisions were needed for the situation. Following this, Boeing would make structural changes to ensure it stayed competitive and delivered for its customers in the long run. The aviation giant has faced more issues since the Boeing 737 MAX crash lawsuit was filed. However, the company reportedly reached a settlement ahead of the scheduled trial. Boeing layoffs are expected to continue in the coming months and reduce the number of employees in its global workforce to 1,70,000. Most of the Boeing employees are based in South Carolina and Washington state. Amid these, the company also announced that it would end the production of 767 aircraft in 2027 once it had completed 29 jet orders.
