Kolkata, Nov 14 (PTI) Jimmy Shergill and Raghu Ram starrer 'Vartak Nagar', having the reference to the cotton mill strike in Mumbai in the 80s, was screened for the first time at the 'Competition on Indian Language's films' section at the 24th Kolkata International Film Festival, here.

Producer Amit Agarwal told PTI before the screening of the film on Wednesday evening, "There are many layers in the film. While the base layer is Mumbai textile strike in the 1980s, the other important layer is friendship."

He said 'Vartak Nagar' is a place in the film situated next to Thane in Mumbai where families of four workers of a mill, which is closed due to the strike in early 80s, reside.

While one layer of the film is how the lives of the children change after the mill strike, in the other layer the character of Shergill came who essayed the role of a gangster.

The film's director Atul Taishete said Vartak Nagar has three different but interlinked layers - the first of four 12-13 year old children, the second of the gangster of 80s and the third layer of the five year old Mumbai Mill strike by two lakh workers.

"Vartak Nagar is a space in which all these things happen," he said terming it as an independent film since it has been backed individually by producers but not belonging to a particular genre like a typical independent film.

"Vartak Nagar refers to the change over of Mumbai from an industrial town to a mega city of big malls. An era of today's generation does not know about," he said adding the same transition had occurred in other Indian cities including Kolkata as well.

Agarwal said the film was shot in real life locations of some yet-existing closed mills as well as in-house work to recreate the era of 80s in parts.

The film will be sent to some other important film festivals in the country and abroad in coming days.
