Two Member Panel Report on STF Probe on Allegations Against Majithia Submitted

Chandigarh, May 23 (PTI) The Amarinder Singh government today submitted before the Punjab and Haryana High court the report of a two-member committee formed to examine the report prepared by the police's special task force on the alleged role of senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a drug racket case.

The division bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Shekhar Dhawan also took the two reports of the Special Investigation Team led by Punjab Director General of Police (Human Resource Development) Siddharth Chattopadhyaya on record.

Chattopadhayaya on May 8 had submitted two reports - one pertaining to the investigation into the role of SSP Moga and a dismissed police inspector in a drug trafficking case and the second report was about his "senior officers" in Punjab Police.

"Punjab Advocate General today submitted in a sealed cover a report of the two member committee comprising Additional Chief Secretary (Home) N S Kalsi and DGP Suresh Arora which was to examine the report of STF chief Harpreet Sidhu on the role of Bikram Majithia in drug racket case," said senior advocate Anupam Gupta here today.

STF Chief H S Sidhu had submitted his report in a sealed cover to the high court on February 1.

Talking to reporters, Punjab AG Atul Nanda said, "as per the court's orders, we had to give our opinion on the STF report for which the CM had appointed a committee of the Home secretary and DGP and that report has been submitted in a sealed cover to the court."

Gupta further informed that the double bench took the two reports filed by DGP Chattopadhyaya on record.

Chattopadhyaya is leading a special investigation team constituted by the high court to investigate the role of SSP Moga Raj Jit Singh and a dismissed police inspector in a drug trafficking case. Two other members of the SIT were Prabodh Kumar, Director, Bureau of Investigation, and Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, IGP.

"Chattopadhyaya filed two reports with the high court on May 8. One report was regarding the investigation of Moga SSP and dismissed police inspector in drug trafficking case. The second report was separately filed. However, the two other members of the SIT did not associate with the second report," said Gupta.

Punjab AG Nanda raised objection to the second report filed by the SIT. "The SIT comprises three people and anything which is not signed by three people is not something which the court has authorized. This is our view," Nanda told reporters.

However, the bench said that it would go through the reports. "Then bench said we will go through all these reports ourselves carefully," said Gupta.

Besides, the stay on the police investigation against Chattopadhyaya in the suicide case of son Inderpreet Chadha, son of former president of charitable-cum-educational body Chief Khalsa Dewan Charanjit Singh Chadha would continue till further orders.

The next date in the case has been fixed for July 25.

Notably, on April 6, Chattopadhyaya had sought transfer investigation into the suicide case of Inderpreet Chadha. He has also accused two senior rank officers DGP Suresh Arora and DGP (Intelligence) Dinkar Gupta of "targeting" him in order to "disable" him from conducting inquiry to look into the complicity of SSP Moga Raj Jit Singh and a dismissed Inspector Inderjit Singh in a drug trafficking case.
