Washington, Nov 7 (PTI) US President Donald Trump on Wednesday favoured Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Trump's Republican party has lost control of the House of Representatives, similar to the Lok Sabha of Indian Parliament. Democrats have regained control of the House after several years.
Pelosi, the 78-year-old former House Speaker, is widely expected to be elected for this powerful position soon in the next Congress beginning January 2019. However, many from her own party want a younger face to lead Democrats in the House.
Trump, who spoke with Pelosi Tuesday night after election results were out, expressed his support to her in a tweet Wednesday morning.
"In all fairness, Nancy Pelosi deserves to be chosen Speaker of the House by the Democrats," he said.
"If they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some Republican votes. She has earned this great honor!" Trump tweeted, as he warned the Democratic lawmakers for not cooperating with him and against investigating him.
"If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level,” he tweeted.
"Two can play that game!" Trump said.
Last night, Trump said as he described the election as a big victory.
The Republican party has retained its majority in the Senate. Weeks before the elections, political pundits had predicted a Democratic blue wave across the country. The president is apparently taking credit for preventing that from happening.
"Received so many Congratulations from so many on our Big Victory last night, including from foreign nations (friends) that were waiting me out, and hoping, on Trade Deals. Now we can all get back to work and get things done!" Trump said.
According to the president, those that worked with him in this "incredible Midterm Election, embracing certain policies and principles," did very well.
"Those that did not, say goodbye! Yesterday was such a very Big Win, and all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!" Trump tweeted.
"To any of the pundits or talking heads that do not give us proper credit for this great Midterm Election, just remember two words - FAKE NEWS!" said the US President.
