Trump Plans to Ban Birthright Citizenship with Executive Order

Washington D. C. [USA], Oct 31 (ANI): In a move highlighting his anti-immigrant stance, United States President Donald Trump has stated that he will sanction an executive order to put an end to the practice of birthright citizenship.
"It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don't," Trump said during an interview with Axios released on Tuesday, reported The Hill.
The move will, however, be contested in the Supreme Court as the 14th Amendment of the Constitution says that any all individuals "born or naturalized in the United States," are automatically "citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."
In the Axios interview, Trump said that a change will be possible via an executive order and an act sanctioned by the Congress.
"You can definitely do it with an act of Congress. But now they're saying I can do it just with an executive order," Trump said, incorrectly adding, "We're the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States, with all of those benefits."
Apart from the US, Canada and several South and Central American nations also exercise the practice of granting citizenship to persons born to non-citizens in the country.
"It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. And it has to end. I didn't think anybody knew that but me. I thought I was the only one," Trump said.
The slated move comes in line of the Trump administration's anti-immigrant stance that was highlighted in the sanctioning of over 5,000 active duty troops to the Mexican border to aid in ongoing efforts to prevent the entry of a caravan of thousands of Central American migrants in the United States.
In a tweet on the migrant caravan, who are still around 1500 kilometres and weeks away from the US border, Trump said that there are "Many Gang Members" among the migrants.
"Many Gang Members and some very bad people are mixed into the Caravan heading to our Southern Border. Please go back, you will not be admitted into the United States unless you go through the legal process. This is an invasion of our Country and our Military is waiting for you!" Trump tweeted.
Trump has also stressed on the dangers stemming from immigration during his campaigning for the Midterm Elections, terming migrants as "illegal aliens" on a number of occasions. (ANI)
