Tributes Paid to Former Chief Justice Rajinder Singh Sachar

New Delhi, May 4 (PTI) Activists and legal experts today paid rich tributes to former chief justice of Delhi High Court and activist Rajinder Singh Sachar who passed away last month.

Sachar (94), responsible for bringing to the fore the socio-economic and educational conditions of the Muslim community, died of pneumonia with septic shock syndrome and heart-related complications on April 20. A meeting was held here to remember him.

Syed Zafar Mahmood, who was part of the Rajinder Sachar Committee set up by former prime minister Manmohan Singh, said, "A man like him hasn't been born in ages. He would always support truth."

The report on the social, economic and educational status of Muslims was tabled in Parliament in 2006. Mahmood said the 450-page report was replete with graphs and data and recalled how Sachar had worked to prepare it.

Senior advocate RS Cheema called Sachar a "revolutionary" whose heart bled for the common man.

"Partition brought out the best in him. it made him a humanist," he said.

Mohammad Salim Engineer, Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, said he respected Sachar as an activist.

Sachar was chief justice of the Delhi High Court from August 6, 1985 to December 22, 1985. He was also associated with the rights group People's Union for Civil Liberties.
