Chandigarh, Apr 28 (PTI) Punjab cabinet minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot today said he met with Union minister Thawar Chand Gehlot to seek the release of funds for the post-matric scholarship for Scheduled Caste students of the state pending with the Centre.
Dharamsot, the minister for welfare of Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes and Minorities, met Gehlot, the Union minister for Social Justice, in New Delhi.
Dharamsot said in a statement that the purpose of his meeting was to press for the speedy release of the balance amount to the tune of Rs 1,048.24 crore due from the Centre concerning the post-matric scholarship for SC students.
He said that the fund is aimed at the development of scheduled castes.
The minister said for the year 2015-2016 under the post-matric scholarship for SC students, a sum of Rs 328.72 crore and for the year 2016-2017 Rs 719.52 crore are due from the Centre.
He said the Congress government in Punjab was committed to ensure that the benefits of the multitude of welfare schemes reach the eligible beneficiaries.
He said the utilisation certificates of the funds released by the Union government so far concerning various welfare centric schemes of Punjab have been sent to the Centre.
