New Delhi, Sep 29 (PTI) Parakram Parv was celebrated in JNU, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia Saturday with lectures by former armymen and programmes on the campuses.

The Parakram Parv is being celebrated to mark the second anniversary of the surgical strikes.

On September 29, 2016, the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes on seven terrorist launch pads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as a response to an attack on its base in Uri earlier that month.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held a day-long event to appreciate the unique contribution by the armed forces in preserving the integrity and security of the nation, according to a statement of the varsity.

Six defence academies and colleges are affiliated with the university and JNU alumni have been giving their services to the nation, it said.

The day was marked with various activities, such as essay writing, quiz and debate competitions.

Major General V D Dogra, a JNU alumnus, spoke about his experience as a successful participant in the Iron Man Triathlon. The event is one of the most gruelling competitions in the world and was held in Austria.

Dogra told students on how he became the first Indian Army officer to win the competition and that dreaming and building on one's dream can convert it into reality.

Major General (retired) G D Bakshi told students about the armed forces' capabilities.

Prof Rajiv Malhotra from the US said in his address that to defeat the designs of India's enemies "we should also fight an intellectual battle".

The evening programmes began with a salute and march past by NCC cadets and also included a performance by an Army band.

At the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), over 500 students associated with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and the National Service Scheme (NSS) participated in various programmes.

Colonel (retired) Gopal Singh paid homage to Brigadier Usman.

Brigadier Usman is remembered for his heroic deeds during the Indo-Pak war in 1947-48 when the Pakistan Army infiltrated the Jhangar area in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch sector and captured it, the JMI said in a statement.

The brigadier recaptured the area from them, but was killed in the line of duty.

Singh addressed the NCC and NSS cadets of the varsity and explained them the importance of Parakram Parv.

"Whichever field you join after your education, service and sacrifice for the nation should be the prime concern," he was quoted as saying in the statement.

On Friday, nearly 4,000 students of five schools of the JMI celebrated Surgical Strike Day on the campus.

The Delhi University (DU) organised talks by senior retired army officers and defence experts.

Major General PK Saighal (retired) and Major General Dilawar Singh (retired) were the guests of honour.

Saighal said he strongly believed that the surgical strike by the Indian Army was different from other countries, a DU statement said.

It said according to Dilawar Singh the Parakram Parv should be considered as a mark of nation building.

The NSS and NCC units of the colleges under the university also organised lectures, motivational talks by army personnel.
