Mumbai, May 25 (PTI) The NCP today accused the BJP-led Maharashtra Government of violation of election code by preparing to disburse compensation to farmers just before the May 28 by-election for Bhandara-Gondia Lok Sabha seat.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said the party submitted a letter to the returning officer today, requesting the Election Commission to stay the implementation of the government's aid scheme.

It was a clear case of influencing voters in the constituency, Malik said.

The announcement of compensation was made in the winter session of the state legislature in December, but it was not given then. Ahead of the by-poll, funds were transferred to the treasury today and farmers will get the money in their accounts tomorrow, the NCP leader claimed.

"If the election commission doesn't stay the implementation (of the compensation scheme), we will move the court," he said.

The government had announced Rs 1,100 crore as an aid package for farmers whose crops were damaged by pests.
