Beijing [China], Oct 7 (ANI): The Chinese authorities on Sunday said that Interpol's missing President Meng Hongwei is currently being investigated for violating China's law. The charges against him are not known yet, according to Al Jazeera.
China's revelation came after Meng's wife, Grace Meng, held a press conference in Lyon where she disclosed that her husband had sent her a picture of a knife before disappearing during a trip to their native place, China, in late September. Grace further added that she felt that it was his way of alerting that he's in danger.
Earlier on Saturday, Interpol officially demanded a clarification from China on the disappearance of Meng.
Euronews quoted the statement by Interpol as saying, "INTERPOL has requested through official law enforcement channels clarification from China's authorities on the status of INTERPOL President Meng Hongwei. INTERPOL's General Secretariat looks forward to an official response from China's authorities to address concerns over the President's well-being."
The Interpol chief has been missing since travelling to China in late September. The French authorities have launched an investigation into the disappearance Meng.
Meng was elected as the Interpol Chief in November 2016, becoming the first Chinese official to be the Interpol president. Interpol headquarters are located in France's Lyon. (ANI)
