Meenakshi Lekhi Backs 'one Nation One Poll' Concept
Advocating the Centre's 'one nation, one election' concept, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi today said nearly four months in a year were lost in elections in the country.
Lucknow, Jul 28 (PTI) Advocating the Centre's 'one nation, one election' concept, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi today said nearly four months in a year were lost in elections in the country.
Addressing a programme here on the concept, the New Delhi MP said, "A major shortcoming of the political system is that one leader or the other is always engaged in elections.
"Every year, nearly four months are lost in elections. The first demand for 'one nation, one election' was made by veteran BJP leader L K Advani," she said.
The concept of 'one nation, one election' talks about holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.
Echoing Lekhi's views, VHP president V S Kokje said elections were held round the year in the country, thus preventing the government from taking tough decisions.
"Till 1967, the Lok Sabha and assembly elections were held together. Today in the country, elections are held round the year in one part or the other. As a result, every political party has to remain in election mood throughout the year," he said.
"Due to this, the governments are unable to take tough decisions, which are necessary for the development of the nation," Kokje added.
