New Delhi, May 7 (PTI) A birthday party turned ugly after a 28-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by a disc jockey in a west Delhi restro-bar following a quarrel over playing of a song, police said today.
The incident took place around midnight at the Raftaar High Speed Bar and Lounge at Club Road, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West, Vijay Kumar said.
The argument broke out between a group of nine people and the restaurant's staff over playing of a song, Kumar said.
In the ensuing scuffle, Vijay Deep, a gym owner, suffered stab wounds after being attacked by Deepak Bisht (25), he said.
Police said a woman, who was part of the celebration, also suffered head injuries after being hit by a bottle.
Bisht, a resident of Uttarakhand, lives in Burari here. He was arrested today, the DCP said.
The incident occurred at the birthday party of Ishu Sondh.
Tejendra Singh, Deep's brother, claimed that the argument started over a trivial issue and he did not know that it would lead to his brother's death.
Singh said they were on the third floor and the DJ was on the fourth floor of the restro-bar.
"The DJ was playing Hindi songs and I requested him to play Punjabi numbers. He lost his cool and pushed me. I put my hand on his laptop and then I was surrounded by the hotel's staff and some bouncers. One of them held me by the neck and they even opened my dastar," he told PTI.
Singh claimed that he did not say or do anything since he was surrounded by 20-25 people.
One of Singh's friends intervened in the matter and tried to calm down the situation, but he was also assaulted.
Singh's brother, Deep, who was downstairs with the others got to know about the brawl and came upstairs to sort out the issue.
"The situation got nasty and the DJ stabbed my brother in the stomach. I did not know that I would lose my brother because of a fight over such a small issue. The accused should be severely punished," he said.
Police said that they have procured the CCTV footage from the hotel and are scanning it to ascertain the allegations made by the victim's friends.
They said that the accused had grabbed the knife from the kitchen and stabbed the victim.
Police are probing whether any other persons were involved in the attack and are taking the statements of the hotel staff and the deceased's friends.
The woman, who suffered a head injury in the quarrel, is out of danger, they said.
In 2017, 91 out of 487 murders reported to the police were a result of sudden provocation or the fallout of a fight over trivial issue.
Till April 30 this year, 27 out of 167 reported murder cases happened because of sudden provocation or trivial issues like a sharing of a cigarette, complaining about quality of food at a restaurant, etc.
