The 4-year-old girl had gone missing on August 13 following which a complaint was filed by her parents at Gairatganj police station, he said.
Investigations led police to Jitendra Singh Gond (24) who, at first, denied the charges but later confessed, said Superintendent of Police Jagat Singh Rajput.
He said that the accused took the girl from her grandmother's place stating that he would drop the child at her parent's place.
"He, however, took her to a jungle and raped her and then smothered her to death with her salwar. He was drunk at the time," the official said.
He said that a post mortem had confirmed rape.
Gond was arrested yesterday and has been remanded in police custody till tomorrow, the SP said.
