Chandigarh, Nov 13 (PTI) The Punjab State Election Commission Wednesday notified a schedule for the revision of electoral rolls for elections to five municipal corporations (MCs) and 43 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in the state.

The development came two days after the Supreme Court directed the Punjab government and the state election commission to notify municipal elections within 15 days and complete the entire process in eight weeks.

The Punjab government had moved the apex court, challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court's October 19 order to notify elections in municipalities and municipal corporations within 15 days, without waiting for the completion of a delimitation exercise.

The elections to five MCs -- Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Phagwara -- and municipal councils have been pending for the past two-three years.

State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri said publication of draft electoral rolls by the electoral registration officers will be done on November 14 and filing of claims and objections, if any, will be done from November 18 to 25.

In this connection, disposal of claims and objections will be done by December 3 while final publication of the electoral roll will take place on December 7, he said in a statement.

Chaudhuri further said that all the deputy commissioners-cum-district election officers have been directed to publicise the existing voters' lists on November 14 in the office of the electoral registration officers as well as in the municipality concerned.

He also said instructions have also been issued to the DCs to arrange a special campaign on November 20 and 21 to facilitate the public to submit their claims and objections, if any, in the municipalities concerned.
