New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) The two persons arrested in the Delhi carjacking case posed as passengers to hire the four-wheeler for Rs 450, and on the way to the airport snatched the driver's phone and wallet, and pushed him out of the car leading to his horrific death, the Delhi Police has found in its preliminary investigation.
The 43-year-old Bijender Shah was dragged for more than a kilometre under the rear wheels of his own vehicle as the accused sped away on a busy road in southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj area. His body was found lying at the side lane of National Highway-8 by the Delhi Police around 11.30 pm on Tuesday.
Hours after the incident came to light, the Delhi Police said it nabbed Mehraj Salmani (33) and Asif (24) and recovered the stolen vehicle.
After initial investigation, police said on Thursday that the accused posed as passengers and hired Bijender Shah's taxi for Rs 450 around 10 pm on Tuesday to take them to the IGI Airport from Saket.
"As the cab reached the Delhi Cantonment area, the duo snatched away his mobile phone and wallet on gunpoint. They also forcefully pushed him out of the car," said a police officer.
Bijender Shah made a desperate attempt to cling onto his vehicle, but Salmani took driver's seat and sped away, dragging him to death.
Special Commission of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda told PTI that the accused drove the car towards Alipur from where they fled towards Meerut in Western Uttar Pradesh.
"The combination of CCTVs and technical intelligence helped us to nab the accused persons," Hooda said.
According to sources, a total of 170 CCTVs were scanned by the team of police officials.
DCP (southwest) Manoj C said five teams of Delhi Police worked continuously to pinned down the accused.
Police sources said the two accused belong to a carjacking gang of Meerut. The gang quickly sell parts of vehicles they steal.
The Uttar Pradesh Police also helped the Delhi Police in tracking down the accused.
Police said both the accused are residents of Meerut.
Salmani was previously involved in four criminal cases in Uttar Pradesh and two in Delhi, while Asif has seven criminal cases in UP and two in Delhi, police said.
The Delhi Police will produce both the accused in a court to get their custody for further interrogations.
"Both will be produced at Patiala House court on Friday afternoon," an officer said.
Bijender Shah, the sole breadwinner of the family, was survived by his wife and their five children. They live in Faridabad.
On the night of the incident, he had last talked with his family at 7.30 pm on phone.
Police said he had dropped a passenger at Saket where he met with the accused.
Bijender had taken a loan to buy the car in March and ran it as a cab on hire to earn a livelihood but the robbers on Tuesday snatched his car and the family's only earning member, they said.
