New Delhi [India], Oct 27 (ANI): Karwa Chauth is a Hindu festival for married women in North India, in which they fast from sunrise to moonrise for one day for the safety and longevity of their husbands. When it comes to festivities and traditions, there is no difference between those governing and those who are being governed. On the occasion of the auspicious day, Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took to Twitter to extend greetings, along with a picture of her with husband Swaraj Kaushal. The minister wrote, "Heartiest greetings on Karwa Chauth."Women across north India ended their fast by observing the full moon. Various women in Lucknow and Bhopal told ANI that this is one of the most important festivals of the year for them. On a lighter note, they also added it is a good time to flaunt the best of sarees they have got, which otherwise remain locked in their cupboards.Rajasthan Police took to Twitter to greet people on the occasion while raising awareness for road safety. Further giving hints for gifts, the police suggested that spouses gift helmets instead of "channi" or the traditional sieve used on the occasion. Speaking to ANI on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Dinesh Sharma said, "My wife has not even had a drop of water since 3 am. This is an important festival for married women. The fast is completed after prayers are offered to the moon. This festival also defines the relationship of man and wife. I extend my wishes to the entire nation on this day."Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was also seen celebrating the festival with his wife.Like many other traditions, Karwa Chauth has also evolved with time. While it started as a custom that was strictly followed by women, men have started to participate and contribute to the festival in their own ways. (ANI)
