Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Aug 18 (PTI) The judicial remand of all the 10 accused in the shelter home sex scandal, including the alleged kingpin Brajesh Thakur, was today extended till September 12 by a court here.

Special POCSO judge R P Tiwari passed the order after all the accused were appeared via video conferencing from the jail.

Tight security arrangements were in place inside the court premises and personal appearance of the accused in the court was done away with in view of the incidents of August 08 when some activists of a fledgling political outfit had attacked Thakur and smeared his face with black ink.

Thakur had also caused a flutter when he spoke to journalists from inside the prison van and claimed that he was being made a political scapegoat since he was likely to get a Congress ticket in the next election.

The Congress had, however, rubbished Thakur's claim.

Today, Thakur who headed the NGO "Sankalp Seva Evam Vikas Samiti" which ran the Balika Grih, submitted before the court that there was threat to his life since he has been kept in a cell along with a Maoist insurgent.

However, the court declined to intervene in the matter saying it is for the jail authorities to decide where to lodge its inmates.

Thakur was moved to a high-security ward earlier this week from the jail hospital where he had been admitted after complaining of a number of ailments.

He was shifted following examination by a team of doctors constituted by the Muzaffarpur civil surgeon, upon the request of the jail superintendent.

It is likely that the CBI, which is investigating the sex scandal, may seek Thakur's remand in near future.

The scandal came to light two months ago when an FIR was lodged by the social welfare department following a social audit report submitted by Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences which mentioned sexual abuse of girls lodged at the Muzaffarpur shelter home.

Besides Thakur, those arrested in connection with the case include the then district child protection officer Ravi Raushan and a number of women staff members of the shelter home.
