New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association condemned the attack on the varsity's student leader Umar Khalid.

An unidentified man targeted the JNU student leader outside the Constitution Club here and gunshots were heard, but he escaped unhurt, according to witnesses even as the police asserted it will verify the incident.

As teachers of the JNU it is unbearable to see our students being rendered so vulnerable, said the JNUTA in a statement.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association would like to express deep anguish at the way JNU as a community have been vilified through an organised political campaign, they said.

"Violence against JNU students, especially from marginalised backgrounds is being normalised and routinised everyday in this manner on social media and electronic media. The university lawyers stand in courts of law and vilify its own students," the JNUTA added.

For over a year, the Delhi Police has been unable to find a single clue to lead to Najeeb Ahmed, who was made to disappear from the campus.

"We condemn the attack on our student in unequivocal terms. The Delhi Police must expedite the investigation and arrest Umar Khalid's attacker immediately. We demand that this state of lawlessness and a witch-hunt against JNU and its students be halted immediately," the statement added.
