New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) The Delhi Police has claimed to have busted an international drug cartel with the arrest of an African national and recovered 2.5 kgs of fine quality heroin worth more than Rs 10 crore in the international market.

According to the police, the accused -- Donatus (42) --used to send consignments of heroin to various countries in Europe, Canada, and South Africa among others through courier companies and several other means.

DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said that Donatus had been staying illegally in the national capital for around five years and presently residing in Uttam Nagar's Mohan Garden area.

Yadav said that two mobile handsets with various SIM cards used in the drug trafficking activities have also been recovered.

Sleuths of Special Cell of northern range had information that a Delhi-based African origin national is a big supplier of drug and has been supplying heroin to various drug dealers of Delhi, Haryana and Punjab since long, the DCP said.

Police said that the accused also used to send consignments of heroin to other countries.

"On April 27, a specific information was received that one African origin national, Donatus, would come near Suraj Vihar bus stand near NSIT in Dwarka to supply a big consignment of heroin to one of his Delhi-based receiver.

"A trap was laid at the vantage points near NSIT around 3.45 pm and Donatus was spotted carrying a grey coloured backpack," Yadav said in a statement.

It stated that Donatus came and started waiting for someone, but later when he was about to move, a police team surrounded and nabbed him.

"2.5 kgs of fine quality heroin was recovered from him. A case under appropriate sections of law has been registered," the statement said.

Further interrogations revealed that he came to India about five years back on a three-month tourist visa.

"After expiry of visa, he threw his original Nigerian passport and continued stayed in India illegally on fake/tampered documents including VISA/Passport," the police said in statement.

Police said that the accused developed his own network of drugs supply of drug dealers in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. For the last two years, he was indulged in drugs trafficking in these places.
