The notification reads that the President, under Section 7(1) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, is pleased to authorise Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, Member, National Human Rights Commission, to act as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, with effect from June 2, 2024, until the appointment of a new Chairperson in the NHRC to fill such a vacancy. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani Appointed As Acting Chairperson by MHA
On December 28, last year, Sayani joined as a member of NHRC. Former Supreme Court Judge Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, who was Chairperson of the NHRC, retired on June 1. He was appointed as NHRC Chairperson on June 2, 2021.
