Srinagar, October 19: National Conference leader Mubarak Gul on Saturday took oath as the Jammu and Kashmir assembly Protem Speaker at Srinagar Raj Bhawan administered by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Notably, senior National Conference leader Mubarak Gul won the assembly election from Eidgah constituency, as a pro-tem speaker. Gul said that the oath ceremony of new MLAs would be held on Monday.

"The responsibility that has been assigned to me - the oath ceremony (of newly-elected MLAs) will be held at 2 pm on Monday (21st Oct). All Members will come there and take oath (as MLAs) ...I will administer the oath to all Members and work would begin after that because the atmosphere that has now set in J&K, has to be taken forward. People have voted in large numbers; this is a victory of democracy. Several of the MLAs are new, we have to include them with the senior MLAs and ministers in camp so that they understand the proceedings," said Mubarak Gul. Speaking about the JK Cabinet resolution on renewal of statehood the Pro Tem speaker said things will happen with deliberation. "This is an early stage...These things happen with due deliberation. This is our agenda. People are looking at us, they have expectations from us...We will do what is good for our State (UT)," he said. The NC-Congress alliance won the assembly polls in J-K held after a gap of ten years. JKNC won 42 seats while the Congress managed to win six. Seven seats were also won by the Independents. The results of the three-phased elections in Jammu and Kashmir were declared on October 8. This was the first election in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.
