Shillong, August 5: Amid the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh after the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Meghalaya government imposed a night curfew in the state along the Indo-Bangladesh border from Monday. Today, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that in view of the current situation in Bangladesh, the Meghalaya government had decided to impose night curfew along the Indo-Bangladesh border from tonight.

The curfew had been imposed from 6 pm to 6 am on the international border with Bangladesh within 200 meters of the border line inside Indian territory, upon the advice of the Border Security Force (BSF). "Today evening I called an urgent meeting on seeing the situation in Bangladesh. State Chief Secretary, DGP, and IG of BSF were present in the meeting. Today we decide to impose curfews all along the international border with Bangladesh from tonight. Amid this crisis, the BSF has directed all field commanders to remain 'on the ground' and deploy all personnel immediately on border duty along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The Inspector General of BSF Meghalaya Frontier, Harbax Singh Dhillon and Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, in a meeting with the state's Director General of Police, Chief Secretary, took stock of the situation related to border security and, after that, instructed all field commanders of the Border Security Force (BSF) to remain 'on the ground'.

Meghalaya shares a 443 km border with Bangladesh and the BSF is responsible for the security of India's eastern border that covers five states: West Bengal, with a border of 2,217 km; Tripura (856 km); Meghalaya (443 km); Assam (262 km); and Mizoram (318 km).
