Gopalganj (Bihar) [India], April 28 (ANI): At least two policemen were killed and over a dozen injured in a road accident in Bihar's Gopalganj when a container truck hit a security bus going for election duty from Gopalganj to Supaul to ensure peaceful voting during the third phase of Lok Sabha elections.

A total of 242 police personnel were on the way to Supaul in three buses when the tragic incident unfolded.

The deceased policemen have been identified as SI Ashok Kumar Umarav from Purnia and Pawan Mahato from Bettiah district.

Gopalganj SP Swarna Prabhat said, "They were going to conduct the elections. They had taken a halt to take food at a hotel near the highway when a container came and hit from behind. Two policemen died on the spot and 10 to 15 policemen have been injured. They were going to Supaul to conduct polls."

The injured have been admitted to the emergency ward of Sadar Hospital. After this accident, traffic on NH 27 was disrupted for several hours. Efforts are being made to restore traffic.

"Three buses parked going to Supaul to conduct the third phase of the upcoming Lok Sabha general elections 2004 were hit near Barhima market under Sidhwalia police station area from behind by a container in which two policemen SI Ashok Kumar Umarav from Purnia and Pawan Mahato from Bettiah district died on the spot and more than a dozen policemen were seriously injured and were taken to the nearest hospital for first aid where they are undergoing treatment. The container has been seized," police superintendent office said in a press release. (ANI)
