Guwahati, June 1: In response to the ongoing flood situation in Barak Valley in Assam, an additional team from the first Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed to the region. The team was airlifted from Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport to Silchar Airport in the Cachar district of Assam.

This deployment is in addition to the NDRF team already stationed in the region. Earlier on Friday, one such rescue operation was held in Kandhulimari and Baliram Pathar villages in Doboka and Hojai, where a total of 149 persons were rescued, including 47 children and one pregnant woman.

Nearly 1.20 lakh people were affected in the Cachar district while 78756 people were affected in the Nagaon district, 77030 people in the Hojai district, 52684 people in the Karimganj district, 10165 people in Hailakandi district.

A total of 560 villages under 25 revenue circles of Karbi Anglong, Dhemaji, Hojai, Cachar, Karimganj, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Hailakandi, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong West and Dima Hasao districts are still submerged under water. The water levels of several rivers including Kopili, Barak, Katakhal and Kushiyara are flowing above the danger level mark following torrential rain. The administration has set up 187 relief camps and distribution centres where 68,600 people are taking shelter.
