Guwahati, Apr 25 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today directed DGP Mukesh Sahay to find out the whereabouts of businessman Rebati Phukan, who was a member of the People's Consultative Group (PCG) formed by the ULFA.
"Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed DGP Mukesh Sahay to immediately conduct an enquiry to find out the prominent businessman and former footballer Rebati Phukan, who went missing on last Sunday," a release from the CMO said.
Sonowal has taken a strong note of the incident and asked the DGP to look into all the facts behind the missing of Phukan, it said.
Earlier in the day, Sahay said a special team has been formed under the leadership of Guwahati Police Commissioner Hiren Chandra Nath to trace Phukan.
"We have alerted the railways, airports and all other possible places to find him. For the last few months, he was not keeping well. So, we are tracking all hospitals as well. We hope to get a breakthrough soon," the top cop told reporters.
On April 22, Phukan went out for a morning walk leaving behind his two mobile phones at his rented house, but did not return thereafter, Sahay said.
Phukan, believed to be a childhood friend of ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah, was a member of the People"s Consultative Group (PCG). The PCG is a citizen's group constituted by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) to initiate talks between the central government and the outfit.
