Port-au-Prince [Haiti], Oct 07 (ANI): 11 people have been killed in Northwestern Haiti after an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck the region on Saturday evening, reports Al Jazeera.

The United States Geological Survey said that the quake hit the region at around 8:11 pm (local time). The epicentre of the temblor was centred 12 miles northwest of Port-de-Paix situated on Haiti's northern coast, while tremors were felt in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, as well as in the neighbouring Dominican Republic.

Urging the people to remain calm, Haiti's President Jovenel Moise said that he was informed of the damage in the Far North. He also said that civil protection workers are on alert.

The Caribbean nation is highly susceptible to earthquakes due to its location in the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'. Haiti is still recovering from a 2010 earthquake which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale and led to a widespread damage of property and claimed the lives of over three lakh people. (ANI)
