Washington D.C. [USA], Aug 16 (ANI): Rudy Giuliani, the lawyer of United States President Donald Trump, has urged special counsel of the US Department of Justice Robert Mueller to wrap up the investigation into an alleged Russian meddling during the 2016 presidential election by September.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Giuliani cited a CNN poll saying that 66 per cent of the respondents want Mueller's legal team to complete the inquiry before the midterm elections in November. He added that the US Justice Department should require Mueller to submit the report by September 7.

"CNN poll shows 66% say Mueller should complete his investigation before the upcoming elections. DOJ has the policy to refrain from investigatory activity in 60 day period before the election. DOJ should require Mueller to submit his report before September 7," Giuliani tweeted.

In June, the Justice Department stated, in a report, that the 60-day rule "is not written or described in any Department policy or regulation" but the officials of the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had admitted "the existence of a general practice that informs Department decisions."

In May, Giuliani claimed that Mueller wanted to shut down his investigation by September 1, though the latter did not confirm the proposed date. The 74-year-old Trump's lawyer said that Mueller could wrap up the probe if the US President sat for an interview with Mueller's team.

Giuliani also urged the swift wrapping of the probe in the backdrop of former FBI Director James Comey revelation in the last days of the 2016 presidential race that he was reopening the investigation into then Democratic candidate nominee Hillary Clinton's email server, according to several media reports.

Mueller is currently investigating the alleged Russian interference during the 2016 presidential election and a possible collusion between Russia and Trump's election campaign.

Ever since the probe began, Trump has been a vocal critic of the same, saying that the investigation should never have been opened in the first place and repeatedly called it as a "rigged witch hunt."

A January 2017 assessment by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) stated that the Russian leadership preferred Trump over Clinton and that Russian President Vladimir Putin had personally ordered an "influence campaign" to harm Clinton's electoral chances and "undermine public faith" in the US democratic process.
