"President George H.W. Bush has been moved from the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital to a regular patient room and is expected to continue his recovery there for several more days. He is alert and talking with hospital staff, family, and friends, and his doctors are very pleased with his progress," spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement.

On Sunday, the 93-year-old former president was admitted to the ICU after contracting an infection that spread to his blood, called sepsis, which can be life-threatening, The Hill reported.

On Tuesday, McGrath stated that Bush was responding and recovering in the ICU, adding that the former US President was talking about his plans of spending his summer at his Maine home.

Bush, a Republican, served as the 41st US President from 1989 to 1993. He also served as the 43rd US Vice-President from 1981 to 1989.

His eldest son, George W. Bush also served two terms as the 43rd US President from 2001 to 2009.
