Agartala, Apr 30 (PTI) CPI(M) MP Jharna Das Baidya, who had allegedly threatened opposition supporters of dire consequences ahead of February 18 polls this year, today tried to justify her statement and claimed her comments were taken out of context by the media.

Addressing a political rally on November 30 last year, Das Baidya said, "If you have to stay in Tripura, you have to obey democratic values and cultural values of the state. Otherwise, we shall treat you suitably before the cabinet is formed after the 2018 assembly elections."

CPI(M) state secretary Bijan Dhar later said the comments were her personal statements and the party was not responsible for it.

However, in a press conference today, the Rajya Sabha MP claimed her comments were taken out of context in the media and leaders of other parties had made similar statements at different places and in different ways.

"Those who are in power now also said former chief minister Manik Sarkar would be sent to Bangladesh, and other such comments. I had said people who were trying to create unrest in Tripura (should keep it mind that) they would have to stay here," she said.

Das Baidya, also the state secretary of the All India Democratic Womens' Association, alleged that activists of the ruling BJP has let loose a reign terror on the workers of the CPI(M).

"Even women are not safe in the state now. There were cases where pregnant women were assaulted leading to miscarriage," she claimed.

AIDWA leaders Krishna Rakshit and Rama Das, who were present at the press conference, demanded that the state government intervene and ensure peace in the state.

Das alleged that a delegation of her party met Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb recently and appealed to him to take measures to stop 'terror' by the BJP activists, but the situation remained the same.
